INTRODUCTION TO SAFETY AND OCCPATIONAL HEALTHY IN MINES

OBJECTIVES:

1) To review and understand the coal mining system and mining methods.

2) To provide theoretical knowledge on basic topics that relate to mining safety and occupational healthy in coal mining, which are: Ventilation Engineering, Dust, Toxic Gases, Fires and Explosions, Heat Harm, Noise, Particle Matters and Radioactive Gases.

3) To learn the basic strategies against the mining natural hazards, including Safety Management, Hazards Identification and Emergence Rescue.

4) To review the historical and engineering basis of safety protection codes and standards and current practices applicable to these issues. 

5) To provide a scenario-based engineering framework for evaluating any past accidents and disasters in Underground mines and determining appropriate protection measures.

6) To apply these engineering principles to design some simple projects and improve safety awareness when working in a mine.

7) Doing lab experiments and gaining some first-hand experiences.

GRADING POLICY:

30% Homework

1. A total of 2 homework assignments will be assigned in the class

1 personal writing (15%) / 1 group report (15%)

The assignments will be graded based on :

Understanding of the topic, novelty ideas and reasonable writing -- 80%

Effort -- 20%  

30% Class Quiz (Midterm) 

1. 6 (each 5%) quiz is scheduled and the dates of quiz are random.

20% Project Design

1.  1 out of 6 project topics is chosen to finish an engineering design.

10% Lab practice

1. Several lab experiments are scheduled for topics in the course.

Submission Guidelines

All students should submit their HW quiz and project using the following format:

1. All pages should be numbered. All pages should have student name on header.

Letter Grade

The scores from your HW, quiz, project and lab will be totaled.

You will get:

A if  88%

B if you get 74% to 88%

C if you get 60% to 73%

D if less than 60%
